Come visit a unique hideaway village situated on the east coast of the Coromandel peninsula. Opoutere is like living or holidaying without watch, quaint and timeless batches lining one side of the road opposite the harbour edge, houses nestled in the bush and hills above. No bustle, no shops, no phone booth. It remains by and large unspoiled and undeveloped, despite being only 4km off the main highway and in such proximity to greatly developed Coromandel holiday centres.
You would describe Opoutere as a small friendly coastal community with the local school nearby, a boat ramp and the Ocean surf beach. It is rare to find 5m stretch of white sand dune beach with not a single house or any other sign of civilization in sight. Coastal zoning limits over-development and the Department of Conservation manages an afforested belt running the entire length of the beach to Ohui, which acts as a buffer zone, preventing any encroachment. To get to the beach you can park in the large car park at the beginning of Ohui Road. Toilet facilities are available. Beach access is by way of the quaint wooden footbridge and a leisurely 10 minute stroll through the forest.
The beach has a raw beauty with spectacular views out to Slipper Island and provides good, safe swimming, as well as great surf. Leave town for the weekend or if you need a break away from the hustle and bustle of city life, then come to Opoutere, it is paradise. With all this in mind relax and enjoy the tranquility of this wonderful place on the Coromandel.
